Monday, July 31st: Goodbye Yellowstone, Hello South Dakota

Today was rather uneventful big travel day.  We worked hard to get packed up and on the road early with the plan to drive through the Lamar Valley on the way out of the park and east to South Dakota.  Wildlife is more often spotted in the early morning hours.

Alas, big families and construction delays kept us from getting there as early as we would have liked so we didn’t see a whole lot more than several herds of buffalo.  The kids spotted a black bear in a berry bush and a little fox followed us along the roadside for a few miles.  We were hoping for a grizzly or some wolves, but it became pretty obvious that you needed to be one of those folks who sat on the side of the road with a telescope sized spotter and waited for special sitings like those.

The drive through Wyoming has been

beautiful and long and uneventful.  We made reservations at a campground with showers for tonight.  The price included 2 adults, which meant $5 for each additional person.  That really adds up and I couldn’t help but ask sarcastically if they never had families visit with children?  Usually 2 adults and 2 kids are included so we pay for 5 extra people which I find annoying enough.  It really irritates me that almost all campgrounds have taken to this practice over the last few years.  Penalizing people for having children - camping used to be the family-friendly option - we’re sleeping outside for Pete’s sake!! But now it’s the norm for us to be close to $100 (or a lot more for a fancier KOA) for a night’s stay.  You can see why we are grateful for the free options we are able to find out this way.  It has saved

us SO MUCH money to utilize these spots.

Congratulations on the new dog again. North western Tennessee has had some major flooding according to national news. See you on the 16th.
