Friday, August 4th: A Little Homesick

Last night was wild.  We all went to bed to the peaceful sounds of the lake, the cicadas in the trees - exhausted from our day of playing in the water and sun we all slept soundly. But around 4am our sweet little spot on the lake turned into a raging thunderstorm.  50 mph winds, 1 1/2 inches of rain.  Our poor little camper shook and swayed and rocked.  Sheets of rain doused the camper over and over and over. Lighting and thunder went off constantly.  Tim and I stumbled around zipping up windows in the canvas pullouts, turning on the generator to run the AC instead, bringing all the wet towels and suits in from the line and then fell back into bed. About half way through the barrage that I wasn’t sleeping through, but the children miraculously were, I began to feel wet.  One spot above my side of the bed began to drip.  I found a pot to catch the drips and then climbed into bed with the three little ones.  Sometime around 6am when the storm finally subsided, I found some sleep.

Two more days and we’ll be home.  In a house that won’t drip and shake in the rain.  I think our little 3 bedroom, 1400 square foot house will feel huge for a while after living in such tight quarters. In fact, one of our last days in Alaska, Elias was helping me with the laundry at Glenn’s house and he said, looking around the little cabin, “Glenn has a pretty big house.”  I tried to hide my grin.  To think that Glenn’s tiny, one-bedroom, maybe 400square foot cabin was big! We had been living in a camper too long.

The final push is here!  Tonight we stay in Alma, Arkansas where I booked a campsite with a POOL because it’s going to be 105 degrees when we arrive (how do people live down here??!!).  The couple from TX will hopefully meet us tomorrow morning with our new doggy friend and we’ll be heading straight on home to Mars Hill.  No one is interested in stopping again anywhere.

Hopefully the shoelace holds.
