Fat and Happy

So much has happened this week! It's difficult to keep up with it all. We've continued our routine of ENS/ESI with the puppies (go here for my post explaining all those letters :).

And here is a video to enjoy watching the daily routine for these little guys. It funny to see the different personalities emerge even just a little with those puppies that quietly take the handling in stride, and those that always have something to say about it. I hope you enjoy watching!

They have all been gaining weight nicely. It's been fun to see them turn into little roly-poly balls. Just look at this photo from last week vs. one taken today.

They take up a lot more space on Lucy just one week later!

I've been able to keep Lucy's weight up with lots of extra puppy chow, meats and organs, broth, goat milk, eggs and scraps of fat. She deserves it! It's been hard work keeping them all fed with their rough treatment - she speaks woefully to her pups from time to time as they nurse. I tried a few different things to keep they puppies paws covered, but nothing stays on long enough so I've taken to covering Lucy with a calendula salve at least once a day. I have been so proud of her mothering. The den is clean, she is keeping her puppies fat and happy, and she takes time for herself already. She does a better job than I do and I only have 7! Lol.

They earned their first real collars today. We tried them out last week and they ended up around their middles even on the smallest setting so we set them aside.

I couldn't believe that a week later that same setting was almost too snug! Lilly has beaten them all hitting 41 ounces today, but most are right around 31-35. My how they've grown.

A few days ago, a few of the puppies began opening their eyes and that was exciting. Here is Beaver and Lilly figuring out a whole new world. They've also began getting their legs underneath them and wobbling here and there in the box. Today they began mouthing one another, I'm not sure if it's "play" yet or just trying to decide if they might work some milk out of something else.

We can't get enough of these sweet little things. Tis the season for miracles and they certainly are just that.
