Exposure, exposure, exposure!

bramblymountainfarm

The puppies have hit the 6 week mark and we have opened up the flood gates. Every day we try to expose the puppies to a new space, or a new activity, new item. This week we explored the great outdoors! It was interesting to watch as some of the puppies charged outside like "bring it on" and others hovered at the doorstep, cautiously sniffing the new air with one paw safely planted indoors. Still too little to conquer the stairs safely, we toted them all to the yard once they made it onto the stoop. After a few moments, they were all charging about here and there trying to catch each and every new scent and space.

We also met the chickens! Again, interesting to watch the ones that took interest and the others that gave a passive sniff and turned to other more interesting smells, and the ones that warily backed away. I can't say I blame them too much. Think what your reaction might be to a chicken that towered over your head!

The goats were not excited to meet the herd of bounding puppies so I had to hold one of the smaller ones so they could get a little introduction. It was hilarious to watch a few of the puppies march right up to the giant goats like he was going to show it a thing or two. A few followed mama's example and bounded excitedly in only to find themselves scurrying under legs as the goats simply walked over the top of them.

A few rides in the car this week too! Now until 12 weeks old is the time to accustom the puppies to anything you might see yourself doing with them as they become your dog. Except for strenuous exercise like jogging with your pup - that needs to wait until the puppy is one year old and fully developed. But if you were interested in the dog going swimming with you, get it in the bath if the weather is too cold! Now is the time!

First vaccinations and genetic testing also went down this week. My husband is the resident vaccination administrator on our farm so he had a busy evening this week while Moriah (6 yr old) helped keep the puppies calm and quiet. Here'e a little clip of them getting the job done. https://www.youtube.com/shorts/cfwotceUM18

And the best part - SNOW! I was so excited to get the puppies out in it and we had our chance with a whole bunch this week! Lucy loved snow as a puppy and it was so fun to watch her play with the pups trying to get them as excited as she was. Cuteness clip of snow fun :) https://www.youtube.com/shorts/BhN25vg4KQs

Next week, Puppy temperament testing begins!!
